Over the years I have received many wonderful, inspiring emails from viewers and collectors of my sculptures. My skill lies in creating things that work... not it writing words that capture their essence.  Below I have taken quotes from a few of the communications that do a better job with words.

Avian Kinetic Sculpture by David C. Roy, motion sculpture

12.20.2009 "I purchased AVIAN around l994 in California (San Franscico) It's enjoyed our home in Kansas City Missouri and now in Minnesota. Your directions for packing and rehanging are still accurate. I created a special niche for it and just rehung it again yesterday afternoon. It's movements and soft clicks never fail to make me smile. Wishing you continued success and opportunities to smile in your future."

Spectrum

"I just thought I owed  you an expression of personal and continuing gratitude from my wife and myself for the beauty and continuously renewing wonder you have brought into our lives by your work. I take a special pleasure "winding" it up each morning. It is my way of greeting the dawn and the day with a sense of joy and gratitude. It hangs in the front hall of my and my wife's home - which is also the headquarters of a non-profit that gets visitors from around the world. We are trying to make the world better, an hour at a time -- and your kinetic sculpture conveys the sense of value beyond price and market that we have tried to spread. See  www.TimeBanks.org for more information.

It just seemed to me inappropriate to keep enjoying it - or getting the ooh's and aah's that the piece consistently evokes without sharing that with  you -- thanking you - or letting you know how much pleasure you have created for a host of people. There is true genius in your work - a sense of the wonder of the universe with all its infinite complexity and beauty and weird order underlying chaos."

Duet

"I happened across your web site while going through old web links looking for something else, and I stopped in to see if you were still creating.  Happily, you are!  The first time I saw your kinetic sculptures, in a gallery, I refused to leave until we had purchased one.  At the time, it seemd like a lot of money, but I've never regretted the purchase.  As an engineer by training, and more importantly by disposition, I suppose the attraction was just instinctive.

We have had a "duet" mounted high on the herringbone-patterned brick wall ascending above our living room fireplace mantle for many years.  It became the art centerpiece that we had spent years searching for.  I'm happy to report that it still works perfectly when we wind it for visitors, who are invariably entranced by watching it.  For some reason, many people assume it must be a clock and ask how to tell the time.  I tell them that it is timeless, as all good art should be."

" I still love the Duet that Rick and I bought in 1993. 1994? Everyone who comes to the house for a visit must watch the dolphins gambol. Thank you for giving us years of enjoyment." Via website 8/26/11

"The Ellipse sculpture arrived in excellent condition about an hour ago and is, thanks to the wonderful template and installation directions, now hanging on our wall.  We are absolutely THRILLED!  The sculpture is all we hoped it would be and more.

We look forward to many, many hours of enjoyment from the Ellipse and just wanted to let both of you know how much we appreciate the artistic vision, craftsmanship, and attention to detail that is obvious in your work and in your business conduct.

Thank you both!  It has truly been a pleasure doing business with you."

"I was given your Ellipse Wood Sculpture as a gift in 2002 and it has been a cherished possession ever since! It fascinates everyone who sees it and is calming both in its visual as well as its auditory motion. I work from home several days each week and always wind it up before I start my day and I can hear the rhythmic clicking of the wood all day long! I have often thought of purchasing other pieces of yours, but do not have a suitable space at the present time. But I LOVE your work!"

Variation Jazz

 via emai: P.C. Wiltshire, England

"Thank you so much for the sculpture – it arrived safely yesterday (thank your for packaging it so carefully) and we put it up on the wall of our family practice waiting room today.

Everyone loves it and the patients at the practice have been standing open mouthed – it has been quite the discussion point all day.

To be honest it was tricky fixing it to the curved wall 30 feet up but we used longer screws and spacers and followed your helpful template and it went up very easily.

Both upstairs and downstairs waiting rooms can see the sculpture perfectly and everyone waiting remarks how calming it is. Our reception area has a lot of wood and the Variation Jazz piece colouring complements everything very nicely.

Please find some pictures enclosed – the first is a merge to try to show how prominently it is placed on the wall between two floors."

Illusion

Illusion

"I enjoyed your work. I have never seen anything like them, and it’s so wonderful to see new works in a world where I feel so often that everything has been done before.  I especially liked the sense of peace in Illusion – just a wood sculpture can create illusions such as moving forward or stands appearing out of nothing.  They were calming to the mind, almost hypnotic.  They would create life in galleries where everything always seems so still and silent.

Movement is one thing that is always missing in art, and your sculptures were a fresh escape from that. I felt like I was floating through your pieces – on the other hand they had no harsh sides, they didn’t scare me or give me unease – I just felt peaceful, natural, at ease in my mind. And I think it is wonderful what you are doing."

Marionette

via Email: M. F., US Army, MD

Marinette Kinetic Wall Sculpture

"I received your replacement spring in the mail on Tuesday and installed it yesterday, and the Marionette works great!  Next year my kinetic sculpture will be 20 years old and it still works and looks exactly like it did when new.  Your customer support in responding to my help query (my email was answered only 20 minutes after I sent it) for a replacement part was as fast as I've ever experienced by any individual or company, and I'm very happy you provide such an outstanding level of support for even your oldest works of art still in customer hands.  Thank you again for your help."

Swan Tango

I am struck by your transformation of physics into pure art and grace. “Minuet”, “Swan Tango” and Odyssey, in particular, prove the possibility of combining the right and left brain with success and beauty. I can only imagine how impressive your work would be in person and hope I will have a chance to see it.

11.28.2009 - "There really are no superlatives I could express that you have'nt heard before. Needless to say I find your work inspirational. I was blown away when I found your work on Youtube. I'm still not completely sure just how you do it, but this is my mechanical side talking. My artistic side revels in the delicacy and beauty that you create. I'll be looking forward to seeing new video's in the future. I have only been producing my own mechanical kinetic work for less than two years as a visual arts student, and would like to persue this field professionally when the time is right. Being brand new to Youtube, I would like to thank you for the exposure of my video and link on your website, it's very much appreciated. via YouTube: mechanicalsculptor.

4.29.10 "I purchase two of your kinetic sculptures many many years ago and have enjoyed them for a long time. I now live a very simple life in Maine in a remote cabin with a wind turbine and solar panels and am greatly enjoying my retirement as an Architect. I gave my beautiful sculptures to two dear friends, one in New Zealand (Serpentine) and one in California (Puppeteer) Both are still working wonderfully!! Thank you so much, David! Continue your great artistic work.... it's truly wonderful. "  via email: G.D. Canada

6.9.11 "Good early morning to you both: A simple missive to say how much I appreciate what you have started, tapped into, created, manifested...KUDOS, KUDOS, KUDOS and a slight bow of the head in your direction. Warm regards, Gordon "  via email: G.D. Canada

6.21.11 "Castaway; Both complexity and simplicity, with a breathless pause as the ancient symbols become inevitably complete. The rhythms of sun, sea and the eternal dance. Of all your wondrous creations, I consider this the most elegant. Thank you" BC via web

6.21.11 "Wow! Your work is really profound. Every piece I've seen is mesmerizing. I have a Gordon Bradt clock and we all love to watch it work, but your wood creations are absolutely alive! I had never seen a piece designed and constructed of wood until I saw one of yours (Cat's Cradle) offered on ebay. Your web site was referenced in the description. Thanks for what you do!" Via web: DJ Arkansas

10.11.11 " I am a student from National Institute Of Design,India. Have just finished my post grad in New Media Design. Kinetic sculptures fascinate me a lot and now I thought was the time when I can make something out of it as I am done with my academic work. While surfing on net, came across your website and could not stop myself from leaving a note of appreciation. I just loved the work you have showcased here and would definitely keep coming back to check out more stuff. Regards." Via web: NK India
